Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Review

Stila Stay All Day Liquid LipstickStila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso

This is a post from the Beauty Skeptic archives that has been given a facelift, but content and opinions are the same. Favorites are being rescheduled and will appear by next Wednesday.

I don’t always bother with liquid lipstick, but when I do, it’s Stila Beso. I wrote about receiving a compliment on some bold red lipstick that made my morning. In turn, that inspired me to compliment someone else, and an awesome chain reaction resulted. Time to talk about the lipstick itself.

Reeeally Red

My skin is pretty agreeable to reds – so I didn’t have to go on a crazy hunting spree for, “the one,” because my options are plenty. Friday was National Wear Red Day; I opted for a red lipstick, specifically Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in the shade Beso. Stila and Sephora describe this shade as a, “true red,” meaning it has no blue, pink, or orange undertones, and is not particularly warm OR cool.

When I first got this lipstick, I swatched it on my lips not having looked up swatches online or having any idea of how pigmented it was; I exclaimed when I saw it. A little goes a very, very long way. Given how pigmented it is and how quickly the color takes, the doefoot applicator wand can be a liiiiiittle bit difficult to work with. Doefoot applicators are awesome for speed and ease of use, but a bold red lip requires careful application. If you have a lip brush, I recommend keeping it handy to help ensure clean edges.

It’s been a while since I’ve been a part of an Influenster campaign, but I got into the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick campaign and recently received the product for free to test.

I received two colors. Rebel Red…

…and Nude Flush.

To date, my experience with liquid lipstick is minimal. I’ve tried Stila Stay All Day, in the game before it was cool, and I’ve tried NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. The prestige market exploded a couple years ago and became heavily saturated with vibrant tubes of product. As per usual, the drugstore market lags behind, and is only recently catching up (I count NYX as kind of in a league of its own; drugstore price-point, bu t not drugstore quality). The Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick is in a friendly price-point, only $6.49 and eligible for coupons and whatnot.

But enough about market share!

Liquid Lipstick: an Unpopular Opinion

I can’t quite pinpoint where the madness took hold. Liquid lipstick isn’t really a new product or idea; nay, Stila has offered their Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks for several dozen moons. At some point within the last two years, though, liquid lipstick exploded. Most companies offer them now, and those that already had them expanded their lines, and companies who weren’t really on the lip game (like Anastasia), got involved.

And ultimately, I don’t get the obsession.

As a lip product go, they’re needy. They require meticulous lip prep; scrubbing to exfoliate is not ever optional when you’re rocking these. You need to moisturize before application…but not too much, or the product won’t properly adhere to your lips! To put the icing on the cake, they tend to be drying as all hell to the lips…and then settle awkwardly in your lip-lines. It’ll last a looong time, but if you ever feel like you need to reapply? More often than not, you’re better off removing it entirely and starting from square one.
