Batiste Dry Shampoo

Batiste Dry Shampoo / Tropical / $6

For several years, I was a devotee of Psssst! dry shampoo. It took me a long time to find and settle on it, sifting through failures from Pantene and Dove, the lackluster one from Not Your Mother’s, and through an incredibly-awesome-but-usually-out-of-my-budget KMS Hair Play. Psssst! was out of stock when I went to replenish, so I decided to try Batiste. If you caught my August Favorites, you saw that it earned a place as one of them.

Application

That pressure, though – depressing the nozzle of a Batiste bottle releases a quick, forceful burst of product where you want it to go. No wimpy, aimless mists here – Batiste’s fine, powdery spray is targeted. Batiste is on a mission. This is awesome if you’re like me and tend to need to concentrate dry shampoo in certain areas – for instance, towards the back of my crown is the spot that usually needs the first, and repeat, attention. Being able to direct product there means less product goes to waste – and it means that areas that don’t need help aren’t risking unnecessary build-up.

Like most dry shampoos, Batiste is slightly powdery. As usual, I let it sit for 2-5 minutes (while I brush my teeth and give my face a quick micellar water refresh), then massage in and brush through. My fingers don’t feel gross after massaging it in (or touching my hair in general), and there’s less build-up on my hairbrush from brushing it through compared to Psssst!

Fragrance

On a recommendation from a colleague, I reached for the Tropical variety. There’s no color in this one, but it smells like coconut… and I have a obsession with coconut scented things, so it works. The fragrance is just enough to be pleasant and refresh the hair without overwhelming. I have found, so far, that it does not clash or overtake my Philosophy Purity or Philosophy Fresh Cream perfumes. Batiste Tropical’s coconut scent doesn’t follow you around all day

Wear

I can comfortably use this two days in a row, and I can go with a third if I want to commit to an updo. If I absolutely, positively must push it, I can get away with a fourth…but it’ll feel gross.

Even in hot, humid weather, I haven’t needed to retouch it. For what it’s worth, though, I don’t sweat very easily…so your mileage may vary.

The Bottom Line

If you’re in the market, give Batiste a shot. In addition to Tropical, they have several scents (Fresh, Cherry, others) as well as a few that have colored product to help brunettes and blondes out a bit. I want to try all their fragrances, but I have a feeling Tropical is going to remain my no. 1.
