Benefit Roller Lash

This legacy post has been given a facelift. Content has been edited for clarity and flow, but the essence is the same. Enjoy!

Benefit Roller Lash may as well be old news, now, but I got a deluxe sample in the Paint it Pink set.

I was prepared to not be impressed. So far, most prestige mascaras I’ve tried haven’t done much for me except my favorite, bareMinerals Flawless Definition. I like they’re Real! from Benefit but not enough to spend $24 on it. By-and-large, the price-per-use of prestige products at their retail prices are rough. When you consider that mascara must be replaced every 3-6 months for performance and sanitary reasons, dropping $20+ on a tube just doesn’t jive with me.

Performance-wise, I was pleasantly surprised.

The Key Claim

The appeal about Roller Lash is that it is supposed to give you the benefits (ha) of curled lashes without having to wrangle the metal curler.

Application

This is definitely one of those, “too good to be true,” claims. I found that it encouraged more lift than a straight wand (like my current oft-used L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black), but it did not deliver the same effects as a lash curler (2019 update: love the Shiseido one!). Benefit Roller Lash features a wand whose applicator is outfitted with short plastic bristles. The applicator is curved to mimic your lashline…and for the first time, I’m HAPPY about it! I used to hate curved wands, but the subtle curve of this want is user-friendly.

Wear & Removal

It isn’t hairspray for your lashes any more than any other mascara. I did feel that Roller lash adequately lifted and separated my lashes. It did not flake, run, or smear with a full day of wear (and a full day, for me, is from 6 AM to at least 6 PM). I was able to remove it comfortably both with my Kirkland makeup wipes and my Garnier Micellar Water.

Other Considerations

Benefit suggests layering they’re Real! over Roller Lash. I’m not into mascara layering, or even applying several coats of the same mascara, so it’s a frigid day in Tahiti that I’ll try it. In my view, it’s just a marketing ploy to get you to buy more product.

The Bottom Line

At $24 per tube, Roller Lash is not a budget-friendly option. You can purchase a travel sized tube for $12 which will probably be more than enough for the average user before it needs to be replaced. It is a good product, and I definitely prefer it to other prestige mascaras I’ve tried. If you’re comfortable routinely spending that much on mascara, give this a shot. Otherwise? L’Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black is my holy grail drugstore pick.
