Maybelline Creamy Matte Daringly Nude

Two weeks ago, I shared a review and some swatches of Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick in Divine Wine. I actually purchased Daringly Nude, another non-corpsifying (on me, at least) nude lipstick. I had never really thought of a matte nude lip but when I went to make my purchase they were out of the other shade I wanted, so I went with this instead – I figured Daringly Nude would be, “safe,” as lip colors go.

I actually swatched this one on my lips as soon as I left the store. It flattered, so I was happy. It felt good on my lips, didn’t dry them out, and it lasted decently. The consistency of Daringly Nude feels identical to that of Divine Wine, though Daringly Nude appears more matte on the lips than Divine Wine. I also noticed that it settled into my lip lines a little bit more – but this may not have happened if I had super moisturized lips.

The next day, I reapplied Daringly Nude but I noticed a weird bumpy or rough texture to it. The product itself went on smoothly, but the texture of the top of the bullet was odd. At first, I thought it was (gross, I know) my own dead skin – but I realized I had just exfoliated my lips, so it couldn’t have been my own carelessness.

I took a tissue to the tip to wipe it away and then looked at it. The tissue just had the pinky-matte lipstick on it. Okay, good. Then I looked at the lipstick itself.

What? What the hell is this? I couldn’t tell if there were particles or if they were just air pockets in the lipstick. But you can see the speckled surface. Weird, maybe gross? I don’t know. Do not want.

I immediately reached out to Maybelline with a description of the product and issue, offering up photos.. I didn’t want to approach the situation with negativity because hey – sometimes issues happen that aren’t harmful. Maybe they didn’t know.

It took a while to hear back from them but last week, I did. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much substance to the message other than that it was being forwarded to the team responsible for product development. I understand, though – it may not be good business to say, “Oh, yeah, sorry – that batch was messed up,” when the issue wasn’t one that would pose a safety concern. They replaced the product, though. (Maybelline Customer Service win!)

Like Divine Wine (and every other lipstick from the Creamy Matte line) it features a frosted, plum-ish tube.

I have used it several times and am pleased to report that my new Daringly Nude behaves normally and is free of weird bumps/texture. Now, onto swatches!

And onto the lips – which are not freshly exfoliated and super moisturized. Despite these conditions, it still swatched reasonably. This is only one pass:

Have you picked up any of the Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipsticks? Between this and Divine Wine I see myself wearing Divine Wine more often, but Daringly Nude is still a good pinky-nude that doesn’t wash me out (I think I’m something like NC20-ish at the moment).
